The group name is IEEE P1394.1; the group rate is $145 plus applicable taxes.
Reservataions can be made starting NOW and the block of rooms
will be held until October 18 at the latest. If you are going to be at the
Rennes meeting, this probably means MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS
RIGHT AWAY. The room block is small to match the attendance patterns
at P1394.1.

I look forward to hosting the working group in Oakland. Jack London Square
is a pleasant area, amply provided with restauarants, a jazz club, theaters,
etc. If any of you have shared Gertrude Stein's opinion that "there's no
there, there" in Oakland, this meeting will give you a chance to disabuse
yourselves of that notion.

The hotel is convenient to two principal Bay area airports, SFO and OAK,
but I strongly recommend that you fly into Oakland. This is becuase the better
weather conditions in the East Bay practically guarantee on-time arrivals
and departures. Those of you familiar with SFO know that it takes only a little
fog or low ceiling to shut one of their two runways and cause severe
backups. The hotel does not offer complimentary shuttle service, but commercial
shuttles are available from the Oakland airport for less than $10.

Denizens of the South Bay who will be in attendance may wish to explore
arriving by BART---it's a plesant alternative to a gruelling one- to
one-and-a-half hours spent in traffic on the freeways! The taxi fare from
the Oakland 12th Street BART station to the hotel is less than $5. For those
who elect to commute from the south, consider taking Interstate 680 north over
the Sunol grade to Interstate 580 west to Interstate 980 to the 18th street
exit in Oakland. It adds about six miles to the trip but is well worth the
congestion saved on the alternative, Interstate 880 north.

BY THE WAY, you MUST RSVP directly to me! If you don't, you may go
hungry!!! Light food will be provided in the morning and the usual drinks
and cookies in the afternoon. The meeting fee will be $110 (this covers
both days); I am attempting to persuade the hotel to accept direct payment
from both hotel guests and local attendees.
