IEEE 1584a™, "Guide for
Performing Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations--Amendment," Clarifies
text and updates calculation in the base arc-flash
standard so users can better understand and apply the guide.
Downloadable copies of this
document should be available by the end of November 2004 with printed
version available by end of 2004.

IEEE Guide for Performing
Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations
Scope
This purpose of this guide is to provide techniques
for designers and facility operators to apply in determining the arc
flash hazard distance and the incident energy to which employees could
be exposed during their work on or near electrical equipment.
Purpose
Previous work by some industrial companies and test
laboratories has defined the potential arc flash hazards for cases of
arcs-in-a-box and arcs-in open-air . Although
the work was extensive gaps still remain in the knowledge concerning
arc flash hazards. This project will identify the gaps,
develop testing methods to obtain data to fill these voids. This
information obtained from the testing will be fed into the guide. The
working group will solicit contributions, from the participating
organizations, for monies, equipment and test laboratory time to conduct
the tests.
