Re: [P1619-3] Data format for OO
Good read, would like to have seen and heard the presentation given to fill in some details. I look at this as another note that we need to fully outline the requirements of the objects and operations before MSG can define messaging in either some form of XML or a TLV schema which seem to be the primary options at this point.
There are use cases for both and I am starting to lean towards a simple TLV format and come back to XML as part of the second go round. I still think that XML will be better suited for server to server communications due to additional complexity of the messaging requirements (compound policy, bulk key exchange/replication, etc...) as well as long term requirements of KMCS if additional policy is to be pushed to the edge.
As for ASN.1 and XML as a whole being bad, I would disagree. If we are still moving forward with the objective of breaking this into two parts, then I think XML will still have a place in the long term with KMSS requirements. My view of part 1 & 2 are Part 1 = KMCS/simple policy and Part 2 = KMSS/compound policy.
Not sure where everyone else stands on this but it would be interesting to get points of view.
Would it be possible to see about getting the actual presentation from Tim Bray during a MSG group call? It might help to make some early decisions about where we need to be leaning for KMCS purposes so that when OO gets done we may already have the basic transport and protocol mechanisms nailed down.

Subject: [P1619-3] Data format for OO
This document has an interesting point of view concerning data formats
that should be used in protocols.

Any thoughts on this from the OO people? This presentation seems to
claim that using either ASN.1 or XML is a Bad Idea, which is
more-or-less the direction in which the OO group is moving.
