IEEE P1680 Family of Standards
for Environmental Assessment of Electronic Products
This Family of Standards provides clear and consistent performance
criteria for the design of electronic products thereby providing an
opportunity to secure market recognition for efforts to reduce the
environmental impact of electronic products. This Family of Standards is
intended to provide a tool for government, institutional and corporate
purchasers. Product manufacturers may also use this tool to earn
recognition in the consumer market, recognizing that certain criteria may
not be applicable to all types of purchasers. Applicability will be
specified in each individual standard.
The environmental performance criteria of the IEEE 1680
Family of Standards are intended to define a measure of environmental
leadership in: the design and manufacture of electronic products; the
delivery of specified services that are associated with the sale of the
product; and in associated corporate performance characteristics.
IEEE
Computer Society’s Environmental Assessment Standards Committee (EASC) is the
Sponsor for the IEEE 1680 Family of Standards for Electronic
Products.
Standards being Revised under
IEEE 1680
The
existing 1680 Standard is currently being revised and separated into two
standards:
·
1680 Standard for Environmental Assessment of Electronic
Products – The Umbrella Standard for the 1680 Family of Standards.
The revised 1680 Standard will be the umbrella standard for the IEEE 1680
Family of Standards for electronic products. The 1680 Standard will
provide guidelines and implementation procedures for the Family of
Standards. Other Standards in the IEEE 1680 Family of Standards will
address criteria for specific products or groups of products.
·
1680.1 Standard for Environmental Assessment of Personal
Computer Products including Laptop Computers,
Desktop Personal Computers, and Personal Computer Monitors - This
Standard will consist of environmental criteria and other materials that
relate specifically to personal computer products.
New Standards in Development under
IEEE 1680
On August 25, 2008,
EPA awarded a grant to the Center for Clean Products and Clean
Technologies (CCPCT) at the University of Tennessee to coordinate the
development of additional standards through the IEEE Standards
Association.
Two processes are
currently ongoing:
1) Environmental
Performance Criteria for Imaging Equipment - 1680.2 Working Group
2) Environmental
Performance Criteria for Televisions - 1680.3 Working Group
Stakeholders have expressed a strong interest in adding
electronic products to the declaration and verification system developed
under IEEE1680. In 2007, the Zero Waste Alliance conducted the “EPEAT
Standard Development Roadmap” (SDR) project to provide recommendations
for development of environmental leadership standards for electronic
products. The SDR recommended that:
·
New standards be developed for four new
sets of products in the following order – imaging devices, televisions,
servers, and mobile devices (PDAs, cell phones, etc.)
·
Future standards should be developed
through an ANSI accredited, voluntary consensus standard process using
the IEEE as the Standard Development Organization
·
The standards should be developed in a
staggered fashion over the next four to five years.
See
the complete report here,
and full information about the SDR project here.
