I agree completely (as an individual - as a Tech Ed I guess I should be impartial).

For one thing, with this choice it seems to me it is not a "luxury" for the standard to support all available floating point formats, 
but pretty trivial. Conversions between different formats (not only between single and double but say from double to decimal64) 
are just by "tightest enclosure" and become simple to define and simple to explain to a user.
