The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) is launching a groundbreaking smart grid initiative for the power engineering, communications and information technology industries with the creation of The IEEE Standard 2030 Guide for Smart Grid Interoperability of Energy Technology and Information Technology Operation with the Electric Power System (EPS) and End-Use Applications and Loads.
You are invited to attend the first meeting, which is being hosted by Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC), at its headquarters in Santa Clara, CA, June 3-5, 2009.
The IEEE-SA P2030 guide will provide a knowledge base for understanding and defining smart grid interoperability of the electric power system with end use applications and loads. It will involve the integration of energy technology and information and communications technologies, which is necessary to achieve seamless operation for electric generation, delivery, and end-use benefits that will permit two-way power flow with communication and control. The P2030 project is being sponsored by the IEEE-SA Standards Coordinating Committee 21 (SCC21 - visit http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/scc21/ ). Any individual interested in shaping the P2030 smart grid guide is welcomed to attend.
Registration Information. For the inaugural meeting, registration RSVP is needed before May 22, 2009, according to the logistics stated in the meeting notice. There is no onsite registration. If you need to cancel your registration please email Heidi Wollesen-Teachout and Bill Ash by May 22, 2009.

Title: P2030 Draft Guide for Smart Grid Interoperability of Energy Technology and Information Technology Operation With the Electric Power System (EPS), and End-Use Applications and Loads
P2030 Scope. This document provides guidelines for smart grid interoperability. This guide provides a knowledge base addressing terminology, characteristics, functional performance and evaluation criteria, and the application of engineering principles for smart grid interoperability of the electric power system with end use applications and loads. The guide discusses alternate approaches to good practices for the smart grid.
P2030 Purpose: This standard provides guidelines in understanding and defining smart grid interoperability of the electric power system with end-use applications and loads. Integration of energy technology and information and communications technology is necessary to achieve seamless operation for electric generation, delivery, and end-use benefits to permit two way power flow with communication and control. Interconnection and intra-facing frameworks and strategies with design definitions are addressed in this standard, providing guidance in expanding the current knowledge base. This expanded knowledge base is needed as a key element in grid architectural designs and operation to promote a more reliable and flexible electric power system.
P2030 Officers: Chair - Dick DeBlasio, and Secretary - Tom Basso.
