RE: Fortran resolves to support our decimal work...

Dan,

Thanks for passing along the good word. Keep it up, your converging and
getting the language group support. Fortran2008? Is Fortran2020 in sight?

Respectfully,

Subject: Resolution from J3 Fortran meeting 174
Cc: dgh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, dnagle@xxxxxxxxx

Hi Dan,

I should properly introduce myself -- I am Michael Ingrassia, Sun's
representative to the US Fortran standards committee J3. I am also, as
our chair Dan Nagle can attest, the "754R liaison" for Fortran.

So it's my pleasure to inform you that the Fortran committee at their
meeting from last week have unanimously adopted the following resolution:

----------------------------------------
The Fortran committee is pleased to see work progressing toward
an interchange format defined
for decimal floating point arithmetic, and will endeavor to
specify a binding to the type specified by 754R in its forthcoming
standard ("Fortran 2008").

Fortran defers to the wishes of the Cobol
community with regard to the format of decimal arithmetic.

Fortran wishes to encourage 754R to make a definite choice of formats,
and looks forward in anticipation to its efficient implementation
in hardware.
----------------------------------------

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

        --Michael I.
