RE: Tentative agenda for Ides of March Meeting...
Hi, Dan ( or is it Dear Mr. Chairman?):
If a motion is made to take 754r (or a March, 2006 version) as a working
draft, I will propose the following amendment:
Amendment: In the section on correctly rounded transcendental functions,
limit the requirements for correct rounding to single precision and
double precision binary functions, and only require well-rounding for
the higher precisions and for the decimal radix.
Rational: The reason that we have included correct rounding of some
transcendental functions is that for these functions (enumerated on p.
106 of the 3-7-2006 draft), we understand what is required to achieve
correct rounding to single and double precision. We know that in double
precision, no more than quad precision is required, except for possibly
a handful of cases, which have been enumerated. For decimal radix, and
higher precision binary functions, we do not yet know just how much
precision will be required. I would like to avoid requiring that
transendental functions have access to a variable precision floating
point package to handle unexpectedly long computations to resolve the
last bit. I suggest that for functions where we do not know how much
precision is required to resolve the last bit of precision, only
well-rounding be required, until we have results similar to what is now
available for single and double precision binary transcendentals. If
anyone can provide information for some of these functions in wider
precisions, if time permits, we can always add to the list of functions
and precisions and radixes for which correct rounding will be required.
Best regards,
Peter
