Good standards make good compromises.  Good compromises don't necessarily 
make good sense (and vice versa).  And they never make everyone happy (and 
vice versa). 

Compromises that don't make good sense aren't compromises, but winner
takes all.

They ride roughshod over those of us who don't care what is decided
provided that it is consistent and makes sense.
