Good standards make good compromises.  Good compromises don't 
necessarily 
make good sense (and vice versa).  And they never make everyone happy 
(and 
vice versa). 

Compromises that don't make good sense aren't compromises, but winner
takes all.

A good compromise generally means that there is no winner and no loser, 
and all parties are equally more (or less) happy (or unhappy). 
 
They ride roughshod over those of us who don't care what is decided
provided that it is consistent and makes sense.

What makes sense to one party is not what makes sense to another.  That's 
why a compromise is often necessary.  (Personally I think the human race 
should have moved to hexadecimal several thousand years ago.  That would 
have made sense.)
