Re: [STDS-754] status of official release of revised IEEE-754

Michel,

The 754-1985 was in effect and active until 29 August 2008 when it was replaced by the 2008 version.

I worked, every year, with the RevCom and the SASB to extend the life, and avoid formal withdrawal, of the 1985 version based on the current working committee revising the standards. If the 754R committee would have died, the 1985 version would have been withdrawn as an active standard at that time. The same applied to 854 which is now withdrawn, formally, as of Dec 2008 SASB meeting being subsumed by 754-2008 .

The active life of a standard is FIVE years and it must have a maintenance action on its five year cycle. The MSC has jumped through hoops on several occasions to keep it alive.

The official IEEE publication date was 29 August 2008 (and that is
date on the copyright page, etc.). So, as of then (as I understand
it), 754-2008 is IEEE 754 (the active version) and 754-1985 is no
longer an IEEE standard.

I thought IEEE 754-1985 officially expired after 20 years, so that we
have been *without* an official standard for almost three years. (We
were supposed to have finished 754R before 754 expired...)

P.S. The parenthetical "We" above is rhetorical, as I only joined the
Working Group in December 2005 -- not that this made a difference.
