The Audio/Video Bridging Task Group is part of 802.1. For general information, please refer to the 802.1 home page.
The charter of the TG is to provide the specifications that will allow time-synchronized low latency streaming services through 802 networks. Specific goals include:
-
Layer 2 time synchronizing service that is appropriate for the most stringent requirements of consumer electronics applications. It is expected that this will be done in cooperation with the
IEEE P1588
working group. This work is done as project "P802.1AS: IEEE Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks - Timing and Synchronization for Time-Sensitive Applications in Bridged Local Area Networks", and the
PAR
and and
5 Critera
are available in the public archives.
- The current effort is focussed on 802.3, but 802.11 support is also being explored. There is a strong possibility that 802.11 will be supported in the final specification.
- At a later time, this work will be extended to support time synchronization over other 802 LANs, particularly those that already have timing services available at the implementation level (e.g., 802.15 and 802.16).
- Definition of an admission control system that allows bridges to guarantee the resources needed for AV streams. This work is done as project "P802.1Qat: IEEE Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks---Virtual Bridged Local Area Networks - Amendment: 11: Stream Reservation Protocol (SRP)", and the PAR and 5 Criteria are available in the public archives.
- Enhancement of standard 802.1 bridge frame forwarding rules to support AV streams. This work is done as project "P802.1Qav: IEEE Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks---Virtual Bridged Local Area Networks - Amendment 12: Forwarding and Queuing Enhancements for Time-Sensitive Streams", and the PAR and 5 Criteria are available in the public archives.
- Establishment of a set of usage-specific profiles that will help ensure interoperability between networked devices using the AV bridging specifications. This work is done as project "IEEE Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks: Audio Video Bridging (AVB) Systems", and the PAR and 5C are available in the public archives.
- Creation of a standard for AV bridging between specific 802 LAN configurations and "802-like" LANs.
All participants should keep up to date on the current "assumptions" document since it includes much of the background information on technical approaches and work that needs to be done.
The original work on AV bridging was done as part of the "Residential Ethernet Study Group" of 802.3
