Overview

The end work product of the IEEE 802.15.10 Task Group on Layer 2 Routing (L2R) is the generation of a recommended practice for routing packets in dynamically changing 802.15.4 wireless networks.

Current Status

TG10 is awaiting the approval by RevCom, which is on the agenda for their January 2017 call.

Future Efforts

Upon approval by RevCom and SA the draft will be scheduled for (publication) editing.

TG10 Timeline

The first meeting of L2R as an Interest Group occurred at the July 2012 Plenary session in San Diego.

The first meeting of L2R as a Study Group occurred at the January 2013 Interim Session in Vancouver. At the May 2013 Interim Session in Waikoloa the draft PAR and 5C were approved by the 802.15 WG. At the July 2013 Plenary Session in Geneva the PAR and 5C generated by the L2R Study Group were approved by the 802 EC.

Interest and active participation during the Interest Group and Study Group phases of the L2R activity was consistent, with an average of 20 attendees, representing more than 15 different entities on average at each of the 7 sessions.

The first meeting of 802.15.10 as a Task Group occurred at the September 2013 Interim Session in Nanjing. In this meeting, a draft use cases/requirements document was generated as well as a preliminary timeline and a request for inputs/presentation from 802.1 during the Joint Session in the November 2013 meeting.

TG10 developed a Technical Guidance Document (TGD) in order to give guidance to the proposers on what the final proposals are expected to cover/contain. Preliminary proposals were encouraged to cover as much of the content of the TGD as possible. In particular, proposers were directed to Section 7.1, covering the simplified scenario developed specifically for the call for preliminary proposals, and to provide the performance information requested in Section 7 based on this scenario. The scenario(s) aide in allowing everyone to have a common reference in which to compare and contrast the different proposals.

A call for preliminary proposals was issued prior to the May 2014 Interim Session. Four preliminary proposals were heard at the May 2014 Session in Waikoloa. After hearing the preliminary proposals TG10 continued developing the scenarios for the Call for Final Proposals. This effort continued for a few weeks after the May mtg.

The call for final proposals was issued prior to the July 2014 Plenary Session. Four proposals, covering the full proposal and partial/preliminary analysis/data were heard at the July 2014 Session in San Diego. TG10 also participated in a status update mtg. with 802.1. The next update with 802.1 is scheduled to occur at the November 2014 Plenary Session in San Antonio.

The call for the 4 final proposals (heard at the July 2014 Plenary Session) to present final data and performance metric information was issued prior to the September 2014 Interim Session. A finalized list of performance metrics, for the proposers to include in their data/analysis presentations at the September 2014 Interim Session in Athens, was completed and posted by the task group by the end of July 2014. As part of the next step efforts an example TOC and processes moving forwards documents were also generated and discussed during the calls prior to the Athens Session. This later document compared specific aspects of the 4 proposals w.r.t. the other proposals and was used to guide TG10 to a baseline proposal.

A baseline proposal was adopted at the November 2014 Plenary Session in San Antonio. The contributors agreed to work together to generate a baseline draft for the group to review prior to the January 2015 Mtg. A high level summary of the 4 proposals (heard in July) was prepared and presented as an update to 802.1 during the November 2014 Plenary Session.

At the January 2015 Interim Session in Atlanta TG10 continued to work on the draft in preparation for going to Letter Ballot. Security aspects of both the messaging data and routing data were a major portion of the discussion at the mtg. Verotiana Rabarijaona was elected by 802.15 TG10 as its Technical Editor.

Before the March 2015 Plenary Session in Berlin TG10 prepared and sent out a draft for a pre-review by TG10, the 802. 15 WG Tech. Editor, and the 802.15 Tech. Expert Group. This pre-review was used to solicit comments and feedback on the draft as part of the preparation for going to Letter Ballot. At the March Plenary TG10 finalized the pre letter ballot comment resolution and TG10 and the 802.15 WG approved going to Letter Ballot. The Chair appointed Charlie Perkins as the TG10 Secretary and TG10 affirmed the selection.

The 1st Letter Ballot (LB 104), of “Recommended Practice for Routing Packets in 802.15.4 Dynamically Changing Wireless Networks” (D01) closed the week prior to the May 2015 Interim Session in Vancouver. The ballot passed and 580 comments were submitted. An additional 270 rogue comments were also submitted and then accepted by the TG during the May Session. Comment resolution began at the May 2015 Sessions, continuing through the July 2015 sessions, and concluding after the July 2015 Session. The TG10 BRC approved the comment resolution database and for the editor to make the changes to the draft as instructed in the comment resolution database.

The 1st Recirculation Letter Ballot (LB 110), of “Recommended Practice for Routing Packets in 802.15.4 Dynamically Changing Wireless Networks” (D02) was held, which closed the week prior to the September 2015 Session. The ballot passed and 580 comments were submitted. An additional 230 rogue comments were also submitted and accepted by the TG during the September Session.

The 2nd Recirculation Letter Ballot (LB 113), of “Recommended Practice for Routing Packets in 802.15.4 Dynamically Changing Wireless Networks” (D03) was held, which closed the week prior to the January 2016 Session. The ballot passed and 346 comments were submitted. An additional 121 rogue comments were also submitted and accepted by the TG during the January Session.
