Ultra Low Power (ULP)

       Overview

Emerging applications in sensor networks demand increasingly small form factor, low power consumption and low cost solutions. From a power consumption perspective, it is desired to achieve a battery life of several years when connected to coin cell batteries and/or making it possible to use harvested energy sources while meeting the targeted data rates and continuing to support the small form factor and low cost attributes of 802.15.4

The purpose of the 15.4q Task Group is to draft an Ultra-Low power (ULP) physical layer amendment to the existing IEEE 802.15 operating in sub 1 GHz and 2.4 GHz license exempt bands. The desired peak power consumption for the PHY should be typically less than 15 mW.

 

            IEEE 802.15.4q Time Line

 

The ULP study group was formed in March 2012. Over the course of May, July, September and November meetings the group developed a Project Authorization Request (PAR) and 5 C. The PAR was approved by IEEE NesCom in December 2012. TG 4q held its first meeting at the January 2013 802 Interim meeting in Vancouver, Canada. A Technical Guidance Document (TGD) was prepared in the subsequent meetings and a call for proposals was issued in September 2013.

 

            Current Status

 

            In response to call for proposals, the study group received four proposals that were presented in the November

            2013 Plenary meeting held at Dallas. These proposals were:

15-13-0705-00 Samsung’s Physical Layer Proposal by Samsung

15-13-0709-0  Presentation on ULP GFSK PHY by Silicon Labs

          or interim sessions.
