Summary
Session #25 of the IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access took place on 12-15 May 2003 at the Hyatt Regency DFW near Dallas, Texas, USA. The session was held in conjunction with meetings of the other 802 wireless groups. 59 people attended.

IEEE Standard 802.16a Published on 1 April; System Profiles Advance in Ballot
On 1 April 2003, IEEE Standard 802.16a was published. The standard, a non-line-of-sight extension of the global IEEE 802.16 WirelessMAN™ standard for 10-66 GHz published in April 2002, provides for fixed broadband wireless access (BWA) in both licensed and license-exempt 2-11 GHz bands.

Task Group d met to continue the 802.16d project, which is creating system profiles to support 2-11 GHz compliance testing. The group resolved comments  regarding Draft 1 of the P802.16d amendment, which was the subject of Working Group Letter Ballot #11. The result was the development of a Draft 2 and the opening of a recirculation ballot. A decision was made to initiate the conversion of the project from an Amendment into a Revision; this would allow the incorporation of IEEE Standards 802.16, 802.16a, and 802.16c into one consolidated document for ease of use.

Recommended Practice P802.16.2a Nears Final Approval
Draft 5 of the IEEE P802.16.2a Recommended Practice on Coexistence, including recommendations for 2-11 GHz, is on the agenda for possible approval as an IEEE Standard on 12 June.

Mobile Wireless MAN (802.16e) Project Issues Second Working Document for Review
Task Group e met for the third time to develop the 802.16e project, which will enhance the WirelessMAN air interface to support mobile users. The group discussed comments received in response to a formal Task Group Review of a Working Document. The result was a revised Working Document, issued for a second Task Group Review. The schedule still calls for completing a ballotable 802.16e draft by July 2003.

Interoperability Documentation for 10-66 GHz Proceeds Rapidly
Task Group C continued its progress toward interoperability documentation for the 10-66 GHz WirelessMAN-SC™ air interface:

  1. The P1802.16.1 Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) Proforma document was awaiting June 12 IEEE Standards Board approval.
  2. The Working Group resolved comments in Working Group Letter Ballot #10, on the P1802.16.2 Test Suite Structure and Test Purposes document. Although ballot approval was unanimous, the comment resolutions resulting in the issuance of Draft 2 for recirculation.
  3. Initial work began under the new Project Authorization Request P1802.16.3 on Radio Conformance Tests. A contribution intended as a baseline was reviewed. The Task Group decided to Call for Comments on a revised version of that contribution.
  4. The Working Group took note of plans to revise the numbering scheme of the 1802.16.X projects in June 2003.

Working Group Liaison Activities
The Working Group reviewed a letter from the IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization in response to an 802.16 generated letter from IEEE 802.

About IEEE 802.16
The IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards has developed and is enhancing the WirelessMANTM Standard for wireless metropolitan area networks. IEEE 802.16 is a unit of the 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, the premier transnational forum for wired and wireless networking standardization. A list of IEEE 802.16 standards and drafts is available on-line, as is a project milestone summary.
