The P802.3av task force is only chartered with the ability to add new
port names. While options 1 and 2 may seem viable (and some of the name
was proposed in 802.3ah), the option that should be followed is option 3
with the exception that 1GBASE must be 1000BASE.
Relative to the combination of devices in an implementation and the
naming convention used by the implementor, that is outside the scope of
P802.3av.

As tasked in the Orlando Meeting I have come up with some options for
PMD naming. These are outlined in the attached presentation. I would
appreciate your feedback (and valued support for this proposal). I will
try to integrate any input received by 8:00 AM (EST) Monday 5/21 in the
final proposal to be presented in Geneva.
