Just as an aside, optical amplification can be done at 1.3u using either a
Floride Doped Fiber Amplifier (expensive) or with a Semiconductor Optical
Amplifier. The SOA is a low cost (about the same ballpark as an ITU grid
pigtailed laser), reletively low power, alternative which might be a good
option as a point-to-point extender.
