One-step growth process and direct electrical pumping open the doors to
the telecom market for a 1.3 mm vertical cavity surface-emitting laser.
Potentially more manufacturable and economical than Gore's 1.3 um VCSEL
that is
optically pumped by an electrically-pumped 850-nm VCSEL wafer-bonded to
the
device, the Sandia VCSEL has the potentially to significantly affect
datacom by
allowing it to leverage technology developed for long haul networks.
