Re: [802.3ae] Bad idea...not including FP laser in PMD

Eric
Thank you for your comments. I don't think that 1.3 VCSEL have been proven
to be more cost effective than 1.3 FP lasers. Augments used for 0.85 VCSEL
do not apply to 1.3 VCSEL. 1.3 VCSEL is now under development and it is
interesting to see if they can compete on cost, reliability and performance
(remain to be seen). On the other hands, 1.3 FP lasers has been deploy in
field for many years. I am not interested and not planning to spark any
debate on the maturity of 1.3 VCSEL and/or its comparison to 1.3 FP lasers.
All I want to point out is that 1.3 FP laser is the most cost effective
solution for <2km SMF applications and is unfortunately not being included
in the standard. Therefore, I sincerely ask the committee to reconsider the
current position of four PMDs: "Are the PMDs providing the "cost effective"
coverage of the distances/fiber type space?", and initiate a call for
interest. If there is no interest in the community, I am willing to
concede...... Thank you.
