Just FYI, 
Many (all?) 1000BASE-T PHYs support GMII.  
Also many (all?) also support 10b mode just in case the mating MAC does not 
support GMII.
It seems PHY vendors did not worry about puttint 'extra' 10B8B coder inside 
their 1000BASE-T PHY.
