Ed,

You may be putting the cart in front of the horse in addressing a weakness
of a
multilevel decoding circut.

I believe that the MultiLevel camp must first reach majority consensus on
the
objectives of a MultiLevel PHY for 10 GbE. These objectives may include
items
such as relative cost to other PMDs, distance support, form factor,
copmatibility with standard interfaces, etc.

Once a common set of objectives is agreed upon AND we've selected a proposal
to
go with, we can start looking at applicable technologies and finially
optimizing
decoder circuits.

If the MultiLevel camp does otherwise, it will ditch itself and by bypassed
by
other PHY proposals with considerably more support.
