Re: Subject: Survey of lengths of installed optical fiber cable

Chris:

The scope and goals of this survey were discussed several times during the
high speed study group (HSSG) during 1999 and on the HSSG reflector. The
intent of the survey was to inform decisions that might have to be made
concerning the HSSG's and now task force's objective of supporting the
installed MM fiber and supporting select media and topologies from ISO 11801.

To respond specifically to your questions, it is too late to change the
scope and objectives. The survey questionnaire is done. Most of the
responses are in and tabulated.

The ad hoc committee did discuss the merit and feasibility of gathering
data on inter POP, inter CO, and WAN access links but the consensus was 1)
we doubted such information could be obtained from a survey of network
managers and 2) we were fairly certain that the goals of at least 2, 10,
and 40 km on SM fiber would cover most of the installed base of such links.

In so far as the applications you describe use installed building fiber or
topologies from ISO 11801, such applications would be covered under the
survey. But as Roy implies many of these applications are not
circumscribed by installed building cabling. Customers are not constrained
by the installed base and the Ethernet industry and the IEEE has much for
latitude in figuring out solutions.

All this being said, I also expect that the applications you describe are
likely to be a significant market for many of the 10 GbE implementations in
the early phase.

Yours
