Given the 4 choices you listed:
1) Leave coupling out altogether as an implementation detail;
2) Specify detail for both AC-coupling and DC-coupling.
3) Mandate AC-coupling;
4) Mandate DC-coupling.
I would have to vote for 3.
Choices 2 and 4 would have numbers in there for DC coupling. For many
reasons previously stated by others, that would be not be a good thing,e.g.
compatibility, limitation on technologies,etc... As for 1, leaving coupling
out altogether as an implementation detail, I think that that would leave
things a bit too loose for the industry.
