I have an application note from Motorola AN1568 (5/96) by Andrea Diermeier, which explain some of your questions.

 

I guess this is a good place to start.  It may have been updated since.

Is it possible to obtain a document which describes the various I/O standards 

like  LVCMOS, LVPECL, LVDS, HSTL, CML etc.

Also it would be nice if some one can suggest on how to interface between the
