Re: [802.3_10SPE] Objective - maintain link under impulse events

Hi Folks,

We already have

7.      Support 10 Mb/s operation in automotive environments (e.g. EMC, temperature) over single balanced twisted-pair cabling.

8.      Support 10 Mb/s operation in industrial environments (e.g. EMC, temperature) over single balanced twisted-pair cabling.

And in the “Objectives - things we seem to have consensus on” email George includes

  1. Do not preclude the ability to survive automotive and industrial fault conditions (e.g. shorts, over voltage, EMC, ISO16750).

I feel that:

“Maintain link in the presence of nonrepetitive impulse events lasting up to at least 50 msec”

seems to be a very specific (but not well defined) case already covered under:

“Support 10 Mb/s operation in industrial environments (e.g. EMC, temperature)”

As a result, I feel it does not need to be a separate objective.

Regards

Peter

Subject: [802.3_10SPE] Objective - maintain link under impulse events

We have had presentations that a desirable characteristic is to maintain link under infrequent impulse events lasting up to 50msec.

There has been some brief discussion of wording, as well as discussion that it is not clear this really needs to be an objective.  It is arguably already encompassed by the “industrial environment” objective.

Please express your opinion on whether this really needs to be an objective, or is already covered under “industrial environment” given the presentations we have had which describe that environment and the impulse events therein.

However, if it is to be an objective, it needs to be defined clearly without having to assume technical decisions in the Study Group, and I’m not sure we’re there yet.  Please suggest alternative wording, if you have some.

Maintain link in the presence of nonrepetitive impulse events lasting up to at least 50 msec

       Possibly substitute “transient” for “nonrepetitive”
