Re: [STDS-802-3-400G] P802.3bs SMF Ad Hoc

Pete,

No disagreement on trying to increase the BMP.

One caveat I would add is that many of these links are built on the assumption of a loss budget. For example, the 4 MPO + 4 LC could be seen as a maximum worst case scenario. It is extremely expensive to build a 4 MPO + 4 LC environment, especially for a 500m reach; therefore, I think it is more likely the end users would avoid this topology. In an enterprise environment, it is more likely that it is a 4 MPO + 2 LC could be seen. Especially if one does the implementation as 4x100G instead of a true 400G link. Given that we're focused on 400G and a 500m reach, this is more likely a 4 MPO only link. Given the added impact of the extra 2 MPO, many operators using these links may decide to do a splice rather than using a patch panel. Patch panels are fine for structured cabling environments, but they certainly impact the cost of building the topology.

Just my 2 cents,
Brad

Marco,

While I agree that many links for DR4 could be just 4 connectors, I think that the PHY has a better Broad Market Potential if it can be deployed in a variety of links including 4MPO + 4LC.

I ran Jonathan’s spreadsheet for both cases (attached) and (as per comments in the Atlanta meeting) the additional -55 dB reflections don’t make much difference to the 1E-6 penalty.

Consequently, I think that we should accommodate the 4 x -35 and 4 x -55 dB link.

Hi Pete,

from meeting minutes :

A chart showing this result was shown and this was added to an updated version (anslow_01a_0216_smf) of the presentation posted after the close of the meeting. As there are only four high reflection connectors in the double link scenario in kolesar_3bs_01_0514, Pete said he would re-run the spreadsheet with four -35 dB connectors and four -55 dB connectors.”

For parallel XCVR like DR4 (http://www.ieee802.org/3/bs/public/14_05/kolesar_3bs_01_0514.pdf, slide 6 and 7), the double link has just 4 MPO, while 4MPO + 4LC is applicable to 2-fiber XCVR (duplex).

So if this is still valid, the spreadsheet should be run with four connectors only for DR4 and eight connectors for FR8/LR8.

Regards

Marco
