Re: [802.3_B10K] Terminology Kickoff

Ali

The output of the mux wouldn’t be the MDI – as that is all of the links – with some of them maybe not even ethernet.

In case of DWDM network, MDI could be defined to be at the output of single module/port or the MDI could be after EDFA/Mux carrying traffic from several ports!

I guess the same would be true for the MDI – as we are talking about a module connection – so the MDI should be obvious also.

Specifically in regard to DWDM network probably PMA and PMD are self explanatory.

Ali,

What is the issue with PMA  and PMD in relation to the DWDM network?  From an IEEE perspective – they are two well defined terms, and i have not heard any confusion about this in relation to the discussion underway.

I would also add the following to the list:

              - Port

              - PMA

              - PMD

              - MDI

All,

As discussed on this week's ad hoc call, there is a need for us to spend
some time on terminology related to the proposed PHY over DWDM network, .
Establishing a common reference point for various terms will enable
effective discussions in our group and the industry.

To that end - I am kicking off this thread to try and identify the terms
that we feel need defined related to this topic.  This will also serve as
input into a potential liaison to the ITU-T, where we will request their
respective definitions of these terms.

Terms identified so far include the following  (alphabetical order)

*            Channel
*            DWDM
*            In-line amplification
*            Lambda
*            Lane
*            Link
*            PHY
*            Point-to-point link
*            Signal
