Re: [802.3_10SPE] 802.3cg 10SPE Task Force Ad Hoc & "10Mb/s Backplane Ethernet" consensus building call - reminder for Wednesday 11 October

Niaz - thank you for being diligent about he patent policy. I will reply offline with what the next steps are with regards to the 802.3cg group.

As for the difference in the slides it is because the cfi activity isn’t actually writing a standard yet, and therefore is treated a little differently under the patent policy (its hard for a patent to be ‘potentially essential to a standard’ when there is actually no standard text being written - only the process of writing a standard.

Nevertheless, you have correctly responded to the 802.3cg call for patents.

Thank you,

Hi Peter and all,

This is Niaz Ahmed from Eaton’s MTL Product line. Re patents, there was another slide set  that was circulated in your email on August 11 asking for anyone that knows of any Patents that may be relevant to this 10SPE Task Force.

Sorry for the late response but this is just to make you aware that Eaton and Controlled Systems Ltd. (CSL)  have been manufacturing Intrinsically Safe Ethernet products (9460-ET range) in collaboration for over 8 years now. The 9460-ET range can deliver Intrinsically Safe (IS) Power over Ethernet (PoEx™) with a single Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable, allowing live connection and disconnection of the end device in Zone 0 and 1 hazardous areas. Please see some product detail in the following links, all these products are PoEx enabled either as source or powered device.

https://www.mtl-inst.com/products/cat/intrinsically_safe_ethernet

An early slide from the 10SPE Task Force in 2016 (attached) shows a concept Intrinsically Safe Power and Data circuit (slide 11) with the Ethernet signals being DC blocked from an IS standpoint using two capacitors – This arrangement of DC blocking with two capacitors (two for IS reasons) in an Ethernet circuit forms the basis of our IS Ethernet Patent (EP1883179B1 attached) and may be relevant for you in moving forward. Our PoEx uses spare cores in the cable for power (with no segregation claimed between power and data cores), 10SPE may propose to use the Ethernet cores for power, but from an IS point of view they are considered the same.

I hope this information will be helpful. Please contact myself and Ian Cooper (@CSL) if you require any further detail.

Kind regards

Hi Folks,

We have a meeting tomorrow morning, 7-9am PT.

So far I have no agenda requests for 10SPE topics, but I anticipate spending 45-60 minutes on the consensus building deck for the "10Mb/s Backplane Ethernet" CFI.

Regards

Peter
