As one of the main people who rolled out the SBC offering of TLS, the demarcation point was a very fuzzy discussion. The service provider needs a clear and distinct point on the network that defines when the trouble is no longer theirs. If it is in the silicon or a physical port it doesn't really matter as long as an isolation point is defined to help in problem/blame resolution.
