Sorry, I don't think this is the case. One can get a PLD with two 2.5G SERDES that can do all the 'processing', and is probably the same part people will use for 1G. True, if you have an ASIC today it is probably a re-spin, but if one is starting from a clean sheet then optics and mechanicals dominate the cost.

I'd like to add that the cost of an entire ONU should be in the sub-$500 range by late next year.   
 
If you add the cost of the electronics and processing required to terminate a 2.5 Gbps data stream, I seriously doubt this is achievable.

As Vincent mentions the most important thing here is cost. 

 

  • The main ONU costs today lies on the optic, where rates above 622Mbps upstream requires expensive lasers in order to maintain the required distance and split. Moving to 2.5 Gbps upstream will result in very expensive transceiver.
