Group Chairs

Please forward this announcement to your groups meeting in Geneva

Thanks

=============================

802.1 & 802.3 Colleagues-

During our meeting week in Geneva, our group will have the (quite special)

opportunity to see a presentation on the CERN, the world's largest particle

physics laboratory (and also the place where the world wide web was born!).

CERN continues as a leading edge implementer of very high speed networking,

on both a local and wide area basis. By special arrangement, this

presentation will be given at ITU and will start during the Wednesday lunch

hour. The room location will be announced later: This presentation will be

open to all meeting attendees.

- 12.30 - 13.30 hrs, at the ITU:

   The talk will cover:

      "What CERN is"

      "What CERN does"

      "Networking at CERN"

and will be given by David Foster

Communication Systems Group Leader at CERN

After the talk, there will be a tour CERN's underground ATLAS detector

- 13.30 - 14.00 hrs: transfer from the ITU to the ATLAS experiment

- 14.00 - appr. 15.15 hrs: Visit of ATLAS experiment (http://atlas.ch/)

- appr. 15.15 hrs - 15.45 hrs: transfer back to ITU

Unfortunately, the tour portion is limited to 50 people (maximum of a

groups size for safety reasons).

Because of this (and the expected high level of interest) there will be a

lottery/drawing to determine who gets to go on the Atlas tour.

Most Session chairs have arranged their busy sessions to make the best

accommodation in their agenda for this in spite of the tour's overlap with

Wednesday afternoon session

The lottery sign-up will be via the web. Go on-line at:

      http://standards.nortel.com/Ethernet/CERN.htm

to enter. One entry per registrant. Entries will be checked for duplicates.

In the unlikely event that all space are not taken by the 802.1 and 802.3

membership we will fill the remaining spaces with family members. There is

provision for you to enter their names when you sign up. The web site will

close sometime Sunday afternoon, so enter now. You will need your meeting

registration number to sign-up and also to claim your seat on the bus.

I will conduct the drawing this coming Sunday evening. Winners of the

lottery will be notified by e-mail early Monday  morning.

For any questions in advance or at the meeting, please get in touch with me.

My special thanks to the many people who spent a lot of extra time and

effort to put this event together.

Best regards,

Geoff Thompson
