Travel recommendations for travel from the USA:

Fly to Manchester Airport, preferably by taking a direct flight from the USA. If travelling from the West cost to attend the meeting this will involve leaving around Saturday lunch time to be able to make the connecting flight to Manchester. If you wish to avoid this or prefer to travel via London Heathrow you have three choices:

1. Take a flight from Heathrow to the Leeds/Bradford Airport (this is the closest airport to the meeting site but there is no rail link to York).
2. Take a flight from Heathrow to Manchester Airport and then take a train to the meeting site at York.
3. Take the Underground to Kings Cross main line station and then take the train to York

Manchester Airport

Manchester airport is approximately 70 miles from York. It has direct flights from New York with British Airways, Continental Airlines and Delta Air Lines, from Chicago and Dallas - Fort Worth with American Airlines, from Atlanta with Delta Air Lines, Orlando with Virgin Atlantic Airways and Toronto with Air Canada.

Manchester airport also has direct flights from London with 7 flights a day from London Gatwick and 20 flights a day from London Heathrow if you wish to fly via either of these airports.

There is a regular train service direct from the airport to York, approximate travel time is 2 hours. If however, you wish to hire a car at Manchester airport there are several rental companies including Avis and Hertz. The drive to York will take about 2 hours from Manchester Airport.

Rail directions from Manchester Airport

• Follow signs to the railway station
• Purchase rail ticket to York. (about £21.00 for a return. Don't buy 2 singles.)
• Get on train to York. The train will stop and reverse direction in Manchester, Piccadilly. The journey will take about 2 hours. (Journey Planner).
• Get off at York station.
• The Royal York Hotel is on the left as you exit the station.

Leeds/Bradford Airport

Leeds/Bradford Airport is approximately 25 miles from York however it is a small airport and somewhat less accessible. It has 5 direct flights a day from London Heathrow if you wish to travel via that airport.

Car rental companies serving Leeds/Bradford Airport are Avis, Hertz and Europcar. The hotel is a 30 to 45 minute drive from the airport. A taxi from the airport costs around £37.

London Heathrow Airport

London Heathrow airport is approximately 230 miles from York. It has many direct flights from North America.

York can be reached from London Heathrow either by flying on to Manchester or Leeds Bradford and following the direction above or by taking a train, via London, to York. Approximate travel time for the train is 3 to 4 hours. If however, you wish to hire a car at Heathrow airport there are several rental companies including Avis and Hertz. The drive to York will take about 4 to 5 hours from Heathrow Airport.

Rail directions from London Heathrow Airport

• Follow directions to the London Underground
• Purchase a Zone 1-6 underground ticket, for King's Cross/St. Pancras (About £3.20 for a single)
• Get on the next tube train. They all go to King's Cross (Picadilly line, Dark Blue).
• The journey will take about one hour.
• Get off at King's Cross/St. Pancras and follow signs to King's Cross Railway Station.
• Purchase rail ticket to York. (The price is about £60.00 for a return ticket. Don't buy 2 singles.)
• Get on train to York. They normally run every half hour, and the journey will take between 1:45 and 2:30 hours. (See Journey Planner for exact train times.)
• Get off at York station.
• The Royal York Hotel is on the left as you exit the station.

London Gatwick Airport

London Gatwick airport is approximately 250 miles from York. It has many direct flights from North America.

York can be reached from London Gatwick either by flying on to Manchester and following the direction above or by taking a train, via London, to York. Approximate travel time for the train is 3 to 4 hours. If however, you wish to hire a car at Gatwick airport there are several rental companies including Avis and Hertz. The drive to York will take about 4 to 5 hours from Gatwick Airport.

Rail directions from London Gatwick Airport

• Follow directions to the railway station
• Purchase a ticket to York. This will include travel across London. (about £65.00 for a return. Don't buy 2 singles.)
• Either:
  • Take Gatwick Express to London Victoria (half hour journey).
  • Take London Underground (Victoria line, Mid Blue) to King's Cross/St. Pancras (half hour journey) and follow signs to King's Cross Railway Station.
  or:
  • Take train to King's Cross Thameslink (1 hour journey).
  • Follow signs to King's Cross Railway Station. This is a walk of about 200yds out of the station and down the road to the main King's Cross station.
• Get on train to York. They normally run every half hour, and the journey will take between 1:45 and 2:30 hours. (See Journey Planner for exact train times.)
• Get off at York station.

Local map

As York is a small city, you're unlikely to need a car during the meeting. If you wish to hire a car once you are in York, there is a Hertz car rental location in the station.
