Few beginner's questions:


1. Looking at 3 years timeline : is GigE prohibitively expensive for
   Digital Homes?
2. If Gig switched BW is available: is overprovisioning sufficient
   solution for BW needs of home applications?
3. Are there any congestion points in home topology/applications?
   If not, isn't deterministic latency feasible in ample-bw-scenario
   of GigE?
4. If total BW of the pipe is >= application need, maximum latency
   should not be greater than PDU latency (+wire length latency: which
   should be small for homes)?
        - Jumbo frames could be an issue, however is it for home apps?
        - Do they use it?

Which brings back me to the question: what is the topology and what
are the application characteristics (i.e. workloads)?

One of the limitations in the current 802.3 specification is that there
is no way to say "I need 20Mbps for my application until I say stop or
timeout". This is absolutely necessary for AV across a point to point
link (and eventually over a bridge). Currently priorities allow you to
say "I need my application to be priority x" which may or may not be
higher than other applications. And if two applications choose to use
the same priority, then they will inevitably step on each other. Trying
to manage this at higher levels (higher than 802.3) is much more
difficult and expensive.

Deterministic latency is also necessary. This is not just a problem
over a bridge, as a point to point link has several applications on
each side competing for the pipe at a given moment.
