[802SEC] FW: Standards Due for Maintenance in 2002 - C/LM

Dear SEC,

Some IEEE 802 standards are due for review by the end of the year;

802.2-1989 (R1997) Local Area Networks: Logical Link Control
[also 802.2a-1993 (R1997) + 802.2b-1993 (R1997) + 802.2c-1997 + 802.2d-1993
(R1997) + 802.2e-1993 (R1997) + 802.2f-1997 + 802.2h-1997]

802.5-1997 IEEE Standard for Local Area Networks: Token Ring Access Method
and Physical Layer Specifications
[also 802.5j-1997 + 802.5r-1997 + 802.5t-2000 + 802.5v-2001 + 802.5w-2000]

{What is the status of 802.5p-1993?? Our database lists it as a revision
and redesignation of 802.2-1989. However, it looks like 802.2-1989 was
reaffirmed in 1997.}

802.6-1990 (R1997) Local and Metropolitan Area Networks: Distributed Queue
Dual Bus (DQDB) Subnetwork of a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
[also 802.6d-1993 (R1997) + 802.6f-1993 (R1997) + 802.6j-1995 (R1997)]

802.7-1989 (R1997) Local Area Networks: IEEE Recommended Practice:
Broadband Local Area Networks

I need input from the SEC as to what position 802 should take on each of the
above standards; reaffirm, revise, extend or withdraw by November 1st. The
WG chairs of 802.2 and 802.6 should give the SEC a specific recommendation
from their 'core of experts'. We then will take a formal vote via SEC email
ballot on the recommended action for these standards.

Regards,

--Paul Nikolich
Chair, IEEE 802

Subject: Standards Due for Maintenance in 2002 - C/LM

27 September 2002

Paul Nikolich,

C/LM has some standards that are due for their 5-year review by the end of
2002. {Standards have a five-year lifespan.}  An action is required of the
Sponsor.  Available choices:

a) reaffirm
b) revise
c) extend
d) withdraw

I MUST RECEIVE A RESPONSE BY THE 1 NOVEMBER 2002 SUBMITTAL DEADLINE (FOR
THE DECEMBER 2002 STANDARDS BOARD MEETING SERIES). IF NO RESPONSE IS
RECEIVED, THE STANDARDS IN QUESTION WILL BE PLACED ON THE AGENDA FOR
ADMINISTRATIVE WITHDRAWAL.

If the Sponsor chooses to revise or reaffirm and the action cannot be
completed by the submittal deadline, please send me an email requesting an
extension of the life of the current standard and notification of the
actions that are being taken. {Please let me know approximately when the
reaffirmation will be submitted; or when the PAR for revision will be
submitted to NesCom and the estimated completion date for the revision
project.}

If there is no further interest in a standard and the Sponsor wishes it to
be withdrawn, you do not need to ballot. It will be administratively
withdrawn in December 2002. {Please note that standards that are
administratively withdrawn can no longer be reinstated via reaffirmation.
The only method for reinstating an administratively withdrawn standard is
to initiate a revision process, starting with a PAR.}

The standards in question are:

(R1997) + 802.2e-1993 (R1997) + 802.2f-1997 + 802.2h-1997]

802.5-1997 IEEE Standard for Local Area Networks: Token Ring Access Method

{What is the status of 802.5p-1993?? Our database lists it as a revision
and redesignation of 802.2-1989. However, it looks like 802.2-1989 was
reaffirmed in 1997.}
