Re: [802SEC] Disbanding of 802.4 and 802.9

Thanks David. That does help. It is consistant with what I expected. All IEEE 802.12 standards have been withdrawn or transfered (802.12e which was a supplement to 802.1D and was incorporated into 802.1D).

Only remaining active item is an IEEE publication of an ISO/IEC document.

The P&P text is perhaps a little vague here because it doesn't say whether "all standards, recommended practices and Technical Reports for which a hibernating working group is responsible" includes the standards they have submitted to ISO/IEC. My feeling is that when all the IEEE standards of the Working Group are withdrawn we can disband the Working Group. Once it is in ISO/IEC, that should count as "transferred to another group or groups".

Regards,
Pat

Hi Pat,

I don't know if this helps but if you go to the URL - [ http://standards.ieee.org/db/status/index.shtml ] 'Standards Information:IEEE Standards Status Report' and enter 802.12 it will give you the detailed status of each 802.12 project. I have provided a summary below but they indeed seem to be listed as either Withdrawn standard or Withdrawn PAR.

The one exception is 8802-12:1998 which is listed as 'Approved Publication of IEEE IP' so I checked its status on the ISO web site [ http://www.iso.org/iso/en/CatalogueDetailPage.CatalogueDetail?CSNUMBER=29521&ICS1=35&ICS2=110&ICS3= ] and its latest status dated 26th April 2004 is listed as '95.20' which means 'Withdrawal ballot initiated' [http://www.iso.org/iso/en/widepages/stagetable.html#95]. I guess therefore this is what still makes it an 'active standard' and we have to await the result of this withdrawal ballot.

Best regards,
  David Law

I'm sure you are right about 802.12. I'm not sure if we have already disbanded it, but it can't hurt anything to do it twice. I think it may be that the last time it came up there was still an 802.12 supplement in effect or it may be that we didn't do it because the ISO/IEC version still had time to run. That should now be nearing end of life if it hasn't already. By the way, I thought it was withdrawn but the Get802 website doesn't reflect that.

802.5: Its latest supplement has a 2001 date and I don't recall it not being withdrawn. Also, there was a reaffirmation ballot conducted on 802.5. I know I saw the original ballot but I can't recall whether there was a recirculation. At the time I got the ballot, I checked and there still seemed to be people selling Token Ring gear so I voted to affirm. Is there someone who can check on the status of that? In any case, the transition of 802.5 to hibernation/inactivity is more recent than the others and it is probably premature to disband it even though I recognize the appeal of clearing our books of old activities.

802.2: I thought this was discussed on the Executive Committee reflector with the conclusion that there were reasons to do a reaffirmation. If 802.5 was reaffirmed, there is some argument for reaffirming 802.2 which required for it. I don't know if a reaffirmation was ever conducted.

In any case, .5 and .2 may be more controversial and should be done as a separate motion.

Regards,
Pat

If we are doing organizational housekeeping, I would recommend we
disband all inactive WGs. If my quick check is right, 2, 5, and 12 are
all dated 1998, and haven't been reaffirmed and are therefore candidates
to be stabilized or withdrawn.
