Re: [802SEC] +++ 10-day EC Email Ballot +++ IEEE P802.3ba 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet approval press release

Dear David and EC members-

I find the wording to be clumsy and overly polysyllabic. But it isn't anything a good newspaper can't prune down by a factor of two in two vectors, length and syllabification.

Other than that and the item below, it is sufficiently factual that I am willing to support it.

I too do have a problem with the phrase "the first standard ever to simultaneously specify two Ethernet speeds". I believe it should be deleted. It just isn't true. There are many valid arguments against the statement.

The full 802.3 standard simultaneously specified two Ethernet speeds ever since the approval of 1BASE5 added 1 Mb/s into the 10 Mb/s of the full standard. That amendment was approved on 12/28/87. Just exactly when the next revision took place after that is not easy to determine, but it was certainly a long time ago. Terminology between "revision" and "edition" was not as carefully managed in those days.

P802.3u (100BASE-T) added 100 Mb/s and Autonegotiation to the standard and was the first to enable a whole generation of products that offered simultaneous (automatically selected) support of attachment to networks of two speeds

Further, there have been at least two projects since then which arguably added two speeds (i.e. two or more) of PHY to the standard at the same time. Those would be:
 - 802.3ah EFM
 - 802.3av 10G EPON (different speeds in different directions)

Therefore, I feel that the quoted text should be removed or modified to more accurately reflect the true situation.

Best regards,

Geoff

Dear EC members,

I vote APPROVE with comments.

As per subclause 4.1.2.2 of the IEEE 802 LMSC operations manual, as IEEE

Working Group members in my vote as follows.

Comments from IEEE 802.3 voter Marek Hajduczenia
================================================

The 10G-EPON standard was the first ever dual rate 802.3 standard ...
might consider some different wording here.

How do you enable 10GE deployments through 40GE and 100GE deployments?

Comment from IEEE 802.3 voter John D'Ambrosia

The release should include reference to the Data Centre applications of
40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet. Please change '.. more powerful server
architectures, network providers ..' to read '.. more powerful server
architectures, data centers, network providers ..'. Please also change '..
high-performance computing, data centers, telecommunications carriers ..'
to read '.. high-performance computing, data centers, telecommunications
carriers ..'.

Dear EC members,

The IEEE-SA has prepared a press release in anticipation of the approval

of IEEE P802.3ba 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet at the upcoming IEEE-SA
Standards Board meeting on Thursday 17th June. This press release will
therefore be released on, or after, the afternoon of Thursday 17th June,

contingent upon the IEEE-SA Standards Board actually voting to approve
the
standard that morning. As the development of this press release was at
the
request of the Task Force Chair and myself I'm seeking EC approval.

Paul has delegated the conduct of the EC electronic ballot on the
following motion to me.

Please note that there are a number of 'additional quotes' appended to
the
draft release from end users. Since this email ballot process may result

in a change to the content of release, the appending of each quote to
the
actual release is pending final approval from the sources once they can
review the final release. This is on the basis that they only have the
ability to approve the appending of their quotes as is. They will not be

able to make any further changes or additions to their quotes - or to
the
release itself. If they choose not to provide approval, due for example
to
a change in the release during this ballot, their quote will simply not
be
included. To allow maximum time for process I am announcing the
possibility of an 'early close' to this ballot (see below).

Best regards,
   David

Motion
======

The EC supports the IEEE P802.3ba 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet press
release, to be released contingent upon the IEEE-SA Standards Board
voting
to approve the IEEE P802.3ba draft as an IEEE Standard, with editorial
changes as deemed necessary.

Move: David Law
Second: Pat Thaler

Start of ballot: Wednesday 2nd June 2010
Close of ballot: Saturday 12th June, 11:59PM AOE

Early close: As required in subclause 4.1.2.2 'Electronic Balloting' of
the IEEE project 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC) Operations
Manual,
this is notice that, to ensure the release is provided in a timely
manner,
this ballot may close early once sufficient responses are received to
clearly decide a matter.
