[802SEC] 802.11 - New Project PARs and 5Cs for consideration during the November 2012 plenary

Dear EC,

This email serves as notification that 802.11 has prepared two new project PAR and 5C documents for consideration during the November 802 plenary in San Antonio.

1.      Global Link (GLK) is the study group activity created,  in parallel with 802.1, to address the bridging in 802.11.

The essence of the project, extracted from the PAR, is as follows:

  5.2.b. Scope of the project:
This amendment specifies protocols, procedures, and managed objects to enhance the ability of IEEE P802.11 media to provide internal connections as transit links within IEEE Std 802.1Q bridged networks.

5.3 Is the completion of this standard dependent upon the completion of another standard:

Yes. This amendment will require features to be standardized in parallel with IEEE P802.1Qbz. This project will be amending the IEEE Std 802.11-2012, and the IEEE P802.1Qbz project will make the corresponding changes that are necessary for the overall solution.

The PAR and 5C , bundled in one document, can be found at:

https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/12/11-12-1077-04-0glk-glk-draft-par-and-5c.docx

During our recently completed September interim meeting

the PAR was approved by the WG 51/0/4

the 5C was approved by the WG 46/0/1

2.      Pre-association Discovery (PAD) is the study group activity created to address early discovery of network services as an aid in deciding which network to join.

The essence of the project, extracted from the PAR, is as follows:

5.2.b. Scope of the project: This amendment defines modifications to the IEEE 802.11 standard, above the physical layer (PHY), to enable delivery of pre-association service information discovery by IEEE 802.11 stations (STAs).

5.3 Is the completion of this standard dependent upon the completion of another standard: No
