5. Type of Project

a. Is this an update to an existing PAR? [No]

If YES, indicate PAR Number/Approval Date []
If YES, is this project in ballot now? [no]

b. Choose one from the following:

[...] New Standard
[x] Revision of existing Standard {number and year} [IEEE Std 1302-1998]
[…] Amendment (Supplement) to an existing standard {number and year} […]
[...] Corrigenda to an existing standard {number and year} [...]

[In the actual P1302, the following items are not covered:

*   frequency range over 1 GHz, where only small samples are available (and hence not applicable for MIL STD 285 versions

*   test methods for small gaskets under near field conditions for INTRA-SYSTEM shielding

*   correlations between DC tests, Transfer Impedance and shielding methods

Some methods in the actual text are only mentioned, but not discussed in depth

It should be an open revision in order to identify good methods, and provide an indepth documentation for each method, in order to prepare new apropriate PAR]

8. Fill in Projected Completion Date for Submittal to RevCom [2002]

9. Scope of Proposed Project:

The scope of the proposed project is an open revision of IEEE Std 1302, in order to identify good and general methods for the characterisation of gaskets, that can be used for a proposal of good engineering and measuring practice. This includes specifically to:

*   identify possible measuring methods for small samples of gaskets (also over 1 GHz)

*   correlation between different methods for characterisation of gaskets, as DC resistance, transfer impedance and different shielding measurements

*   identify possible measuring methods for near field characterisation of gaskets, for use in intra-system applications (typically on PCB boards)

In a first draft form, the end-report should provide good methods, with for each method an indepth discussion. So, that users are able to make a good choice of testing methods. In the long run, new IEEE standards and PAR should become avaible.

---

10. Purpose of Proposed Project:

The purpose of this project is to provide to:

*   manufacturers of gaskets

*   designers of electronic systems

appropriate methods for the characterisation of gaskets, in this way that the figures can be used in a direct way to indicate the level of shielding that will be provided in a given application.
