The possibility of eliminating traditional and time tested means of
learning and teaching with computers is difficult to emagine. Because
telemedicine needs a doctor. The problem is not technology or schools,
colleges or universities as we know them. The problem from my limited
knowledge is lack of knowledge in the social aspects of computer
applications in education.
As Roby Kling and Agre note at different time we need to recognize the need
for technical and pedagogical assistance. After all are we not involved in
caring business.
If we go out side our limited area whcich anthropologists call 'crossing
the boarder' we can see the extent to which Managaement information systems
and educational technology do share similar problems. Computer users in
Finance departments still have problems with Lotus, Excel... However, this
is the first department to computerize and for whom the killer application
VisCalc was developed.
The advent of on-line learning for a solo learner could not treansform
education, learning and empower the community. But human ability to use
on-line learning will do. On-line requires technical and pedagogical
support and training.
Learning is both participation and acquiring knowledge. To participate
actively and to acquire important knowledge we need a guide till we are
able to make sense. But....
How many coleges, universities and corporate workplaces do have well
organized training and support departmrnts to help us make sense and learn
better. computer users still turn to their friends aand use informal means
of learning. Resource allocation for training and emrging computing
problems are still small. Under this condition unless we want to import MIS
problems to schools and colleges it is difficult to imagine the death of
taditional education.

training and adult learning: Implications for HRD.
He is currently a consultant and looking for a teaching position.
