Chris O'Hagan's plea for teachers to reach more students may sound like heresy to educators, but he is right. Especially for exceptional teachers or in areas where teacher shortages exist, we just must find ways to be more efficient. Scaling up in distance education is the next great challenge. We must do it, and we must do so without degrading quality. The world demand for more educational services is nearly overwhelming.
Educational institutions who want more students per teacher simply must provide more resources, and more technical and staff assistance. Teachers and their technical consultants must find ways to automate more completely the logistical requirements of D.E., ranging from registration, monitoring of group work, and grading of assignments and tests.
