Before we decide that the push towards autonomous learning will not work,
we need to consider that typically our school systems create an environment
that
does not traditionally support autonomous learning. In fact, in too many
classrooms, the instructor is always in control of the learning. We are not
teaching learners the skills (goal-setting, progress monitoring, reflection,
etc.) for autonomous learning so why are we surprised that learners are not
self-directed, self-motivated, independent learners when they go online.
About 10-20% (I call these transforming learners) of the population may be
driven by their own passions and intentions to push themselves beyond the
classroom (instructor's) goals and standards. Another 60-70% (performing and
conforming learners) are satisfied to proceed at the slower pace ...as
managed by the teacher. The final 10-20% may resist learning (for a variety
of reasons) to some degree.
If you're interested in looking at a learning construct that considers
autonomous learning, see this web site.

If you're interested in trying out an instrument that measures autonomous
learning,
I can let you try a sample.
