INSPIRAL: Linking Virtual Learning Environments and Digital Libraries: A
New JISC-funded Study
INSPIRAL (INveStigating Portals for Information Resources and Learning)
is a new JISC research project, based at the Centre for Digital Library
Research and the Centre for Educational Systems, University of
Strathclyde, Glasgow. INSPIRAL aims to identify and critically analyse
issues pertaining to integrating virtual learning environments (VLEs)
and digital libraries, focusing on institutional and learner
perspectives for higher education in the UK.
Virtual learning environments (VLEs) and digital libraries are two
important recent developments in the infrastructure of e-learning. VLEs
have already become more integrated with educational information systems
through the development of managed learning environments (MLEs).
Meanwhile, most HE and FE institutions provide some kind of electronic
access to digital resources (digital libraries), or to a combination of
both physical and virtual collections (hybrid libraries). Integrating
VLEs/MLEs with digital and hybrid libraries has the potential to further
streamline and enhance e-learning.
The challenges this potential convergence presents will be under
investigation by INSPIRAL from 1 May to 31 October 2001. Identification
of and consultation with key stakeholders, including learners, will be
the primary means of enquiry. INSPIRAL is actively seeking interested
parties who would be willing to take part in their research.
