That was an excellent point that you made, Albert. As someone who comes to
this dance from both a technical background and an instructional background,
I have to agree that I personally prefer to use a palette rather than the
single wrong tool to do the job that I need to do at a given time.
One of the key factors in working in this space requires some either/or type
of decisions, as no one of us is expert at all phases. Standardization for
certain of what I refer to as the logistical items (attendance/access
verification), facilitated grading schemes and calculators, the student
enrollment management (and faculty 'timecard') kind of stuff is a necessary
component if we are not to find ourselves in a Babel of differing platforms.
At the same time, the ability to bring a richness of resources to
stimulate/facilitate the knowledge/wisdom creation process of education and
address the needs of the learner/student and facilitate the ability of the
instructor to create that experience is also another important component.
What concerns me at the present time is that certain players in the space
are doing what they have done in the commercial space with FUD
(fear/uncertainty/doubt) and/or vaporware... seeding the popular press and
the academic press with the idea that since they are the dominant player on
the desktop, they have the panacea for the educational space as well.
I will be following this discussion with much interest. And hope that some
of the spirit of Open Source lives here as well.
