Most of what I know is from reading (and hearing a lecture at the Game
Developers Conference):

(Free registration is needed to read this.)

I expect it cost more when it was new. But underlying your question are some
important issues of pricing and consumer educational software. My feeling is
that there are lots of mediocre educational software titles that sell for
very little. This makes it hard for quality titles to charge enough to make
business sense.

I think that the reason that good movies and books don't have a big problem
competing against cheap poor quality movies and books is that most consumers
read reviews or wait to hear from friends before seeing a movie or reading a
book. Educational software is typically bought by parents who don't know
what they are doing. If more parents read reviews then the products would
get better and high priced quality products could thrive. And if more people
read reviews then there will be more and better reviews as well.

Best,
