In response to Bob Leamnson's observations on
'Learning to Learn' I would like to add a few points.
In my career as a teacher, educator, administrator I
believe he has hit the nail partly on the head but has
not gone far enough. For students to learn effectively
they certainly need to touch base with their
particular preferred learning styles and utilise those
to the full, but additionally teachers/lecturers
should, within the bounds of their curriculum, ensure
the material is presented in a relevant and
interesting fashion. Ensure we motivate the students
to learn, not just fill their cup of knowledge up!
Seek to ensure they question the content of what they
are learning and teach them how to learn.
I am also cognisant of the high correlation between
students liking a subject and their willingness to
learn. This doesnt mean we have to become
entertainers, but we do need to examine the way we
teach. It is even more crucial when we are working in
the arrea of Information Technology where the students
in some cases may be the experts.
