Have them make up sentences using the words= put in context.

I would content that rather than making sentences the students usually would
benefit from seeing the words used in sentences. When meeting a new word,
the student (or anyone else for that matter) does not know the various
restrictions that apply to the word. Therefore making sentences results in
either a limited selection of the possible usages or wrong/incomplete
usages. This is where well-designed games and puzzles can be useful. The
activity can be structured so that the student will meet the word in ways
that clearly demonstrate the restrictions and that these must be
comprehended in order to be successful. The activity designer can find usage
examples from any of the available, online corpora. Many words which are in
theory not restricted are actually restricted when we look at the word's
usage in the real world.
