It has been my experience that good teachers provide the scaffolding
needed to help learners develop internally motivated and independent
learning strategies. This scaffolding is fairly rigid when supplied to
novice learners of any concept and age level. It is gradually decreased
as the learner becomes more adept. Perhaps this is the middle ground we
are seeking? Best practice would then be the gradual phasing from
instructor lead learning experiences to independent learners. This will
involve freedom to take risks on the part of teachers as well as learners.
