Online Collaborative Learning: Theory and Practice
A book edited by Tim S Roberts, Faculty of Informatics and Communication, Central Queensland University

Introduction
The benefits of collaborative learning are widely known: they include such factors as building self-esteem, reducing anxiety, encouraging understanding of diversity, fostering relationships, and stimulating critical thinking. Why then are collaborative learning methods not practiced more widely?
This is an interesting question, worthy of more research. But one thing seems fairly certain: the enormous growth of the Internet provides an ideal environment for new forms of collaborative learning to be explored. Research into online collaborative learning needs to build on existing research
in related areas, and ask further questions: how can groups with shared goals work collaboratively using the new technologies? What problems can be expected, and what are the benefits? In what ways does online group work differ from face-to-face group work? And what implications are there for
both educators and students?

Overall objectives of the book
The book aims to provide relevant theoretical frameworks and latest empirical research findings in the area of online collaborative learning (aka CSCL, computer-supported collaborative learning). It is written for professionals who want to improve their understanding of successes and failures in
this area, and those who are keen to introduce such techniques into their own teaching, most particularly for those working within a tertiary education environment.

Target Audience
Professionals working in the area of online teaching and learning; researchers from a wide variety of backgrounds including educationalists, psychologists, sociologists, cognitive theorists, computer scientists, etc, teachers, particularly those in colleges and universities, instructional designers,
web developers, and undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
What is Online Collaborative Learning?
Historical Perspectives of Collaborative Learning
Sociological Theories underpinning Collaborative Learning
Collaborative Learning versus Cooperative Learning
Strengths and Weaknesses of Collaborative Learning
Current Practice in Collaborative Learning
Online Learning - Theory and Practice
Online Communication
Online Collaborative Learning - Combining the Two Elements
What about the Technology?
Current Practice in Online Collaborative Learning
The Future for Online Collaborative Learning

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before July 31, 2002 a 2 to 5 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by August 15, 2002 about the status of their proposals and sent
