Subject: [IFETS-DISCUSSION:3514] Social spaces in online learning
From: Marcia Pereira <marcia.pereira@imes.mavt.ethz.ch>

Hi Lisa and others,

I work with research and development of virtual learning environments
nowadays. But despite dealing primarily with the use of IT in education now,
I am also an architect. From my architectural background, I bring a good
experience with the design and construction of buildings via a participatory
methodology, particularly considering users' needs and expectations and how
users interact within the space. Therefore, I am also very interested in
exploring the importance of social spaces in online learning environments
and how they affect the learning process.

When doing my PhD (finished 2 years ago), some of the main theories I used
and which you may find interesting to look at were:
1. Constructivism
2. Social Cultural Theories (with emphasis to the work of Vygotsky)
3. Collaborative Learning
4. Reflective Practice (with emphasis on the work of Donald Schön)
5. Critical Pedagogy (Paulo Freire's work especially considers the social
and political aspects of learning)

I could send you a list of references, if you find that these themes are
relevant to you.

Good luck and best wishes,
Márcia
