Replying to Anita Pincas, I agree with your comments about the different use
of "assessment" and "evaluation". It would seem that here in Australia we
also separate out the use of these two terms as per Anita's description.

Regarding assessment, I think it is difficult to have this discussion if it
relates to isolated subjects (or courses). It is important to have a "whole
of program" approach because different types of assessment will provided
different skill development opportunities for the student. It is assumed
when a student graduates from one of our (RMIT) programs that they will have
a range of skills, not just specifically relating to the content area they
have studied, but they will be able to communicated/interact across a number
of mediums/modes (text, verbal, non-verbal, electronic, in-depth, concise,
work in teams, be self directed, etc). So not only is it important to
assess in a way that demonstrates the student has achieve the desired
learning outcomes regarding the content, but also (at a whole of program
level) that the individual subjects are coming together to develop those
more diverse skills. This by definition suggests that a "one-size-fits all"
approach or even a "best practice" model is not going to be appropriate if
it focuses at an individual subject level. This certainly has implications
for the way we develop courses currently (at least within my own
University), where the content is often mapped for the whole program, but
the design of the assessment of each subject is left up to the individual
academic.
